How a new digital agriculture platform is helping farmers access crop guidance, identify plant problems and connect with trusted seedling suppliers — with PremaGrow among its nursery partners.

By PremaGrow | Agriculture & Innovation

Agriculture remains a vital pillar of Kenya’s economy, supporting millions of livelihoods and contributing to food security across the country. Yet, for many farmers, achieving a productive and profitable harvest begins with overcoming familiar challenges: access to reliable agricultural advice, quality seedlings, timely pest and disease management, and dependable connections to agricultural service providers.

A growing wave of digital innovation is offering new ways to address these challenges. Among the emerging solutions is OnLima.shop, a digital agricultural platform designed to bring practical crop guidance and seedling-sourcing support closer to farmers through WhatsApp.

For farmers looking for better-informed decisions throughout the growing season, OnLima offers a simple starting point: ask questions about your crop, share the challenges you are experiencing and explore the next steps towards healthier plants and improved farm management.

Technology meets everyday farming

Imagine a farmer walking through a tomato field and noticing that several leaves are turning yellow. The problem could be linked to nutrient deficiencies, irrigation, pests, disease or other environmental factors. Without timely guidance, identifying the cause can be difficult, and the wrong intervention may lead to unnecessary costs or further crop damage.

OnLima seeks to make this process more accessible by allowing farmers to initiate conversations through WhatsApp. Users can describe their crops, share their location and submit photographs of affected plants to help provide context for agricultural guidance.

The platform supports farmers with information on crop varieties, planting practices, crop care and common plant problems. It also helps connect growers with seedling nurseries, bringing information and sourcing opportunities into one accessible digital channel.

By using a familiar communication platform, OnLima reduces the need for farmers to navigate complicated systems or download a separate application before seeking assistance.

The objective is straightforward: help farmers make more informed decisions, access relevant agricultural support and approach crop production with greater confidence.

Connecting farmers with quality seedlings

For PremaGrow Seedlings Nursery, the quality of a harvest begins long before the first fruits are picked. It starts with selecting suitable varieties, raising healthy seedlings and ensuring that young plants are properly managed before they reach the farm.

As a member of OnLima.shop, PremaGrow is part of an emerging digital agricultural network that connects seedling propagators with farmers seeking planting materials and crop-production support.

Through its services for propagators, OnLima provides a channel for nurseries to showcase available or upcoming seedling batches and connect with prospective buyers. This creates opportunities for farmers to plan their planting schedules while helping nurseries improve visibility and coordinate demand.

The connection is particularly relevant for vegetable growers who need reliable access to seedlings for crops such as tomatoes, capsicum, cabbage, onions and other horticultural varieties.

For a farmer preparing land for a new production cycle, finding the right seedlings at the right time can make a significant difference to planning. For a nursery, reaching farmers before seedlings are ready for transplanting can help improve order coordination and reduce the risk of unsold stock.

Through this digital connection, PremaGrow sees an opportunity to extend its reach beyond the traditional nursery setting and make it easier for more farmers to discover its products and services.

A digital platform for the agricultural value chain

OnLima is designed to serve more than farmers alone. Its approach also recognises the important role played by seedling propagators and agricultural professionals.

Farmers can seek crop guidance and assistance with plant problems. Propagators can connect with potential customers and showcase their seedlings. Agronomists can contribute technical expertise, review complex crop cases and support the delivery of agricultural guidance.

Bringing these participants into a connected ecosystem creates opportunities for better communication across different stages of agricultural production.

The platform also incorporates Ririkana™ technology, described by OnLima as an agricultural institutional-memory architecture. Its purpose is to support more contextual agricultural interactions, recognising that useful guidance depends on details such as a farmer’s location, crop history and the specific conditions affecting a field.

While digital guidance cannot replace every field visit or laboratory diagnosis, it can provide a useful starting point for understanding a problem and determining when additional professional support may be necessary.

Why this matters for smallholder farmers

Smallholder farmers often operate with limited resources, making every decision about seed, fertiliser, irrigation and crop protection important.

Access to timely information can help them assess problems earlier, plan input requirements and make more deliberate production decisions. Connections to reliable seedling suppliers can also make it easier to identify suitable planting materials before the season begins.

OnLima’s WhatsApp-based approach is especially relevant in a farming environment where mobile communication is already part of everyday life.

By making agricultural support easier to access, the platform offers a practical pathway towards better-informed farming decisions. Its potential value lies not in technology alone, but in how effectively that technology connects farmers with relevant knowledge, trusted suppliers and experienced agricultural professionals.

Ultimately, productivity and profitability still depend on a combination of factors, including good agricultural practices, weather conditions, input quality, effective crop management and market access. Digital tools can support these efforts, but they work best when combined with sound agronomic advice and responsible farm management.

PremaGrow: Growing opportunities through partnership

PremaGrow Seedlings Nursery is committed to supporting farmers through quality vegetable seedlings and technical assistance. Its participation in the OnLima ecosystem reflects an interest in exploring new ways to connect with growers and make agricultural services more accessible.

For PremaGrow, digital agriculture creates an opportunity to strengthen relationships with farmers beyond the point of seedling purchase. It can support better communication, improve visibility of available planting materials and help growers plan their production activities more effectively.

This complements the nursery’s wider focus on helping farmers establish healthy crops and build more productive agricultural enterprises.

As agriculture continues to evolve, collaboration between seedling producers, technology platforms, agronomists and farmers will remain important in developing practical solutions to everyday farming challenges.

The future of smart farming in Kenya

The future of agriculture will depend not only on improved seeds, modern production techniques and efficient irrigation, but also on how effectively farmers can access and use reliable information.

Platforms such as OnLima demonstrate how digital communication can help bring agricultural guidance and seedling-sourcing opportunities closer to growers. For participating nurseries such as PremaGrow, the approach opens another channel for engaging farmers and supporting their production journeys.

The wider opportunity is to build an agricultural ecosystem in which farmers are better connected to knowledge, quality inputs and professional support — from the first seedling to the final harvest.

For Kenyan farmers, that journey can begin with a simple question about a crop and a conversation that helps them identify the next step.
